Make Money you Say?
Before you even think of making money on IMVU you will need to work towards making a profitable (and TOS abiding) catalog and that’s a much more involved topic for a whole other thread.
Please do not fixate on your Tier level. Tiers have absolutely no bearing on profitability and you will waste valuable energy if focused on a score card vs your bottom line.
If you are one of those rare creators that has broken the profitability barrier congratulations! It’s not an easy feat and not many can do it.
What will earn me Cash?
Only profit made from New Catalog Sales can be paid in cash.
- If you have existing Credits you cannot change them into cash.
- Transferred Credits cannot be turned into cash.
- Purchased Credits cannot be turned into cash.
- Using workarounds to artificially turn credits into sales can flag your account and/or make you hit your MASA Cap (more MASA info below)
While in the past we had re-sellers that acted as brokers for exchanging credits, now any 3rd party selling of credits for cash is strictly against IMVU’s TOS and can get your account disabled. Credits can only be purchased from IMVU or by purchasing one of their official gift cards.
- The History of Resellers
When IMVU first opened they allowed for third parties to act as credit brokers, buying and selling of IMVU’s currency offsite. Resellers were the only way for creators to earn cash from their work on IMVU and they provided a valuable and much needed role in the IMVU economy.
Most of the products that built up the backbone of how IMVU looks today only exist because resellers gave creators a reason to make new products for IMVU. And for that we owe them a huge debt of gratitude.
As IMVU grew in popularity so did the reseller market and those looking to make a quick buck. Not all resellers vetted the creators they did business with, allowing people to make money off of stolen and UFI content.
IMVU decide to take over the role of paying its creators in order to control the market and who gets paid cash. They closed down Resellers in 2015.
First off you will need to have a PayPal account in order to receive payments. If you are in a country where PayPal or the US Government does not allow banking transfers you will not be able to get payments from IMVU. https://www.paypal.com
Next you will need to register with IMVU to receive cash payments.
This means providing your real life contact information as well as submitting a tax form. IMVU will be reporting the income you earn to the IRS.
- W9 For US based Creators
- W-8BEN For Non US Creators
- Non US Creators will have 30% tax withholding automatically deducted.
- US Based Creators will receive the full amount, though will be responsible to pay taxes on payments received.
If everything looks on the up and up you will be approved.
If your catalog is full of obvious copyright violations and trademark infringement your catalog will not be approved and you will not be able to make money on IMVU.
Once registered and approved you can set your account to make money on all future sales that would have earned you credits.
(Promo sales are still a Token)
You will be given the option to set the percentage of every future sale you make to either be given to you in credits or as a cash. You can set this ratio of credits to cash anywhere for 0-100% and change it at any time.
- Cash is earned at the rate of 40 cents for every 1,000 Credits
100cr = 4¢
1,000cr = 40¢
10,000cr = $4.00
100,000cr = $40.00
1,000,000cr = $400.00
Payments are made in US Dollars
Once you have accumulated a balance of $50 or higher you can request a cash payout.
It will take 3-7 Business Days for IMVU to process your payout and transfer it to your PayPal account.
You cannot request a second payout until the current request is completed.
Monthly Average Sales Amount Caps, MASA
The amount you can cash out at any one time is limited by your average performance over a 12 month period with allowances for reasonable growth. As such it is best to have a catalog that has been around a bit and has slowly built up its profitability over time.
If you had no profits for months and are suddenly earning thousands the cash amount you can cash out will be capped. You will need to contact IMVU’s Customer Service if you run into this problem.
