Three attacks in two days

Post by Elaini » Fri Aug 18, 2017 9:29 am

Yesterday a car ran over people in a busy tourist pedestrian zone in Spain. Today there was two near simultaneous stabbing attacks in both Germany and in Finland - in the city within 15 minutes' drive from where I live. All three had fatalities, critical injuries and two had multiple attackers that I know of.

I live in a rural countryside with only a few services (museum, grocery store, gas station, bus stops) within the short walking reach, unlikely to be the center of any major event. But I still have to wonder where Europe is going.

It is horrifying yes.

I actually was at the Market Square in Turku as it happened. Horrible things happen but life goes on in the end. The bastards managed to kill and hurt people but let him just have that and absolutely nothing else.

I have seen how here people are starting to divide. Foreign origin people are scared to leave home and native origin people are scared of everyone who looks different. Then there's one extreme of street patrolling violent right wing and and also kind of aggressive left wing too.

In cases like this there should be unity and support.

Also I am very disappointed that the next day there was "close the borders" and "Finland first" nationalists' manifestation at the market Square while solidarity manifestation of immigrants wasn't able to go there as they got scared of their own safety as the police couldn't be sure they would be able to protect them against other people. The manifestation people also dismissed the police advice not to go to the market square. Why not a manifestation that was in France for example after the Charlie Hebdo attack? That I would have taken part in in a heart beat as I did in Paris as I lived there.

I understand people are angry, I am too, but shouting racist slurs and then others shouting at the "racists" at the market square isn't the way to go at all.

Also there was a similar stabbing attack in Siberia, Russia too.

Yep - there are idiots in every country, in mine too. But per every idiot there are wonderful people still.

Fanning the fire is the last thing I want so I don't want racial slurs either. I'm sorry that you had to witness that. I can assure you that it's not a normal day in Turku at all. It's a diverse, peaceful city by default.
