Framerate wobbling while gaming in Windows 10?

Post by Elaini » Sat Apr 22, 2017 4:40 pm

By wobbling I mean the framerate rhythmically going up and down. Try this...
Joel Lee @ MUO wrote:The new feature in Windows 10, called Game Bar, makes it very easy to record your gameplay for use in YouTube videos and what not. This feature is provided by the native Xbox App that comes installed on Windows 10 (which some consider to be bloatware).

The problem is that Game DVR, also called Xbox DVR at times, can have a serious impact on gaming performance — even when you aren’t recording!

You can disable Game DVR with a simple registry tweak.
  1. Open the Start Menu and launch regedit.
  2. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\System\GameConfigStore.
  3. Right-click on GameDVR_Enabled and select Modify… then set the Value to 0.
  4. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows.
  5. Right-click on Windows and select New > Key and name it GameDVR.
  6. Right-click on GameDVR and select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value and name it AllowGameDVR.
  7. Right-click on AllowGameDVR and select Modify… then set the Value to 0.
Done! Close the Registry Editor and restart your computer. Now the Game DVR feature of Windows 10 will be disabled and you should hopefully have much better FPS performance in the games you play.
And I did.

I started wondering if something in Windows 10 was at fault because I do regular hardware and software maintenance, and my previous Windows version (7) had the games running a lot smoother. Pretty ironic that Windows 10 is supposed to be gamer friendly yet one of it's own bloat accessories cause such an interference.

Mainly those where the Game DVR would normally pop up and start running when you start the game. Those are usually high end games, such as Elder Scrolls or The Witcher. The difference is very clear with those in full screen.

But I've uninstalled and disabled even the other features of Windows 10 that I never use or have a better software for, or mainly have spying purposes. I've made it a lot better in startup, performance and bandwidth so I'm happy with the overall results.

Nevermind, it was the thermal paste of my GPU, not any software. Problem solved and performance is much better now.

Interesting.. i knew the paste could turn into overheat problems but never thought it could impact in fps... an interesting view is this video with some old school cpus without ventilation and its consequences :o https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xf0VuRG7MN4

So it turned out. My computer became both quieter and the framerate improved. I guess that since my computer is using less power because the cooling is no longer ineffective, it can redirect that energy on the performance and not sweat it too much.

On top of that, my new thermal paste is now more technically evolved than it used to be. It was a bit more expensive but since the clerk recommended it to me for my problem, I didn't want to take a risk of breaking something because of second hand materials so I bought it. And it paid off, my GPU is as good as new.

But boy did unscrewing the component off the computer and then even opening the guts of GPU make me nervous. I feel more confident now. I might even build my next PC if I had the savings!
