Uploading the same texture to 2 or more slots ... there is a better way!
Let's say you derived a room and added a wood texture to the kick boards and decide it would also look nice on the window frames. Simply look in the XRF drop down and take a note of the name of the .chkn or .xrf for the kickboards. Then click on the window frame's slot and use the XRF drop down to swap the chkn/xrf for the one you just made a note of. Voilà! You now have one less texture to create/upload and saved kbs as well! In theory, if you wanted a completely black room you could change every texture slot to the same chkn/xrf and adding one black texture would change the entire room to black!

The XRF window is a powerful tool for fixing and modifying products, experiment and have fun!

Usually, but good question!
You can use it for anything. Examples:
A furniture item where you want one or more parts made of the same metal.
A top that uses separate textures for the front, back and sleeves could conceivably use the same texture everywhere. (Rarely practical but possible).
An accessory where the same leather pattern is desired in more than one place.
A hairstyle that is usefully split into different textures could be put back to the more basic way of doing things.
